it's been two, three years?
since i last saw you. trust coincidence, or fate -- as you always call it -- to throw two people together again for reasons unknown. two people, who could probably have lived the rest of their life never seeing each other again.
it's strange how we still can never find the words to fill up this empty space that's left hanging there, while our minds work at crazy speeds to search for missing words.
but as yet the silence is never filled.
we stand on the bus, both with our usual stances. i slouch against the side and look out of the window at the objects rushing past, while you talk loudly to your friends, trying desperately to avoid the stares of everyone.
it's the only way to make you feel secure, isn't it.
strangely we never see each other. but why do i feel that you did that. maybe we know each other too well, maybe we have always been looking at each other.
then when it starts to rain the feeling of deja vu creeps in. i see your eyes flicker towards that little girl screaming excitedly it's raining and involuntarily i turn to her.
then our eyes meet for a flicker of a second, and the years vanished.
it's things like these, that make us sure that you are you and i me. but otherwise we never call each other. it would seem as though our reactions would be the same. it's been many years since our very first meeting. i was about four, and you six? when i screamed delightedly it's raining! and you told me i was stupid.
two, three years since you gave me that stack of cards you treasured so much and said well, that's it. bye. and i remember how much you treasured those cards, so i pushed them back to you.
then our eyes stay locked for a few more seconds, and we quickly tear our gazes away.
we are strangers, you and i. and we now exist in different worlds. but we have this memory that bridges our worlds, and it is this memory that makes you bend down immediately to pick up my fallen books.
are you alright, you ask. and for the merest flicker of a second again we both look at that pathetic purple-blue-white friendship band at your ankle. then it all comes flooding back wave after wave, and i am hit by all these waves of memories.
we lapse into silence, while the air around us hangs still. yet it is for the merest fraction of a second as you quickly pass me the books while your friends snicker.
we spend the rest of the journey looking opposite ways, but walking on that bridge cautiously, precariously. and then i remember how you said you would never keep that ugly band because it was of such lousy craftsmanship.
then the rain stops, and i get off the bus.
